Lantern Row Expenses

Status: Partial.

  1. Your muse

Build a team expense tracker for a made-up 12 person company called Lantern Row Studio. All the people and numbers here are made up. I want a real multi-screen product, not a single page: 1. Sign-in: each person signs in if sign-in is available, and is either an employee or a manager. 2. Expenses list: every expense with date, merchant, category, amount, status and who submitted it, with search and filters by category, status and person. 3. Add an expense: a form with date, merchant, category, amount, notes and a receipt photo. 4. Receipt photo reading: when someone adds a receipt photo, the app reads the merchant, date and total from the photo and fills in the form so the person can correct it. 5. Edit and delete: people can edit or delete their own expense until it is approved. 6. Approvals: a manager screen with a queue of submitted expenses, where the manager can approve or reject each one with a comment. The person who submitted it sees the decision and the comment on their expense. 7. Dashboard: charts of spending by month and by category, plus totals for pending, approved and rejected. 8. CSV export: download the expenses currently shown, with the filters applied, as a CSV file. 9. Saved data: everything stays saved after a page reload and after coming back later. Start it with a few sample expenses from made-up people such as Priya Nair, Tom Okafor and Dana Reyes, so the screens are not empty the first time.

    Who it's for

Employees and managers at the made-up 12 person Lantern Row Studio who submit and approve work expenses.

    How it works

    1. Open the product and pick your name on the sign-in screen. Your role, employee or manager, is shown with your name.
    2. Land on the expenses list and see sample expenses from Priya Nair, Tom Okafor, and Dana Reyes.
    3. Use search and the category, status, and person filters to narrow the list.
    4. Choose Add expense and fill in date, merchant, category, amount, and notes.
    5. Add a receipt photo if you have one. The app reads the merchant, date, and total and fills them in.
    6. Check and correct the filled-in fields, then save. The new expense appears in the list as Submitted and stays saved after a reload.
    7. If you are a manager, open Approvals, read the queue of submitted expenses, and approve or reject one with a comment.
    8. The person who submitted it opens their expense and sees the decision and the comment.
    9. Open Dashboard to see spending by month and by category and the pending, approved, and rejected totals.
    10. Back on the expenses list, choose Export CSV to download the expenses currently shown with the filters applied.

    Limits

    • Sign-in is a local person and role picker stored in this browser. There are no passwords, real accounts, or sign-in shared across devices.
    • All expenses are saved only in this browser. They stay after a reload on the same browser, but they are not shared with teammates on other devices and clearing browser data removes them.
    • Receipt reading is a best effort. Handwriting, blur, glare, or a cropped total can be misread, so the person must check and correct the filled-in fields before saving.
    • Only the person who submitted an expense can edit or delete it, and only until it is approved. Managers use the approvals screen to approve or reject instead of editing.
    • Sample people and sample expenses are made up for Lantern Row Studio and are not real company records.

    From your inspo

The person gave a text-only request for a multi-screen team expense tracker for a made-up 12 person company called Lantern Row Studio, with sample expenses so the screens are not empty at first. All the people and numbers in the request are made up.

Cost per run: about $0.02 (est.). One receipt read uses about 1,500 image and text input tokens at $4 per million (about $0.006) plus about 500 output tokens at $20 per million (about $0.010), for about $0.016, rounded to $0.02. Adding, listing, approving, and exporting expenses use no model calls.

What you asked for 19 of 21 checked and working

    • WorksR1: Build a team expense tracker for a made-up 12 person company called Lantern Row Studio, with all 12 made-up people available to pick from. The company is called Lantern Row Studio in every heading and sample record. Works Sign-in lists 12 named people and every main heading uses Lantern Row Studio.
    • WorksR2: Treat every person and every amount as made-up sample data. All the people and numbers here are made up, and no real company records are used. Works Sign-in states all people and amounts are made up and no real company records are used.
    • WorksR3: Provide a real multi-screen product with separate screens, not a single combined page. This is a multi screen flow and it must not be reduced to a single page. Works Separate sign-in, expenses, add expense, detail, approvals, and dashboard screens are shown.
    • WorksR4: On the sign-in screen each person signs in by picking who they are from the 12 people and is shown as either an employee or a manager. The choice is kept in this browser so they stay signed in after a reload. There are no passwords or shared accounts. Works Sign-in shows employee or manager for each of the 12 people, no passwords, and says the choice stays after reload.
    • WorksR5: The expenses list shows every expense with date, merchant, category, amount, status, and who submitted it, with search and filters by category, status, and person. Works Expenses list shows date, merchant, category, amount, status, and submitter with search and category, status, and person filters.
    • WorksR6: The add expense form has date, merchant, category, amount, notes, and a receipt photo field, and saving it adds the expense to the list so it is still there after a reload. Works Add form shows date, merchant, category, amount, notes, and receipt photo, and the reloaded list shows an added expense.
    • Not metR7: When someone adds a receipt photo, the app reads the merchant, date, and total from the photo and fills them into the form so the person can correct them before saving. Not met No screenshot shows a receipt successfully filling merchant, date, and total into the form.
    • WorksR8: A person can edit or delete their own expense until it is approved. Edits and deletions are saved and still in effect after a reload. Works Detail screen shows an edit form for the signed-in person's expense and an edited merchant persists in the list.
    • Not metR9: Managers see an approvals screen with a queue of submitted expenses and can approve or reject each one with a comment. The decision is saved and still shown after a reload. Not met No screenshot shows approve or reject actions with a comment in the approvals queue, only the empty queue.
    • WorksR10: The person who submitted an expense sees the manager decision and comment on their expense in the list and on its detail view. Works The list shows manager comments and the detail screen shows a manager comment field.
    • WorksR11: The dashboard shows charts of spending by month and by category, plus totals for pending, approved, and rejected. Works Dashboard shows spending by category and by month charts plus pending, approved, and rejected totals.
    • WorksR12: Export downloads the expenses currently shown, with the search and filters applied, as a CSV file. Works Travel filter shows 2 expenses and the CSV preview shows the same 2 rows.
    • WorksR13: Everything stays saved after a page reload and after coming back later in the same browser, including expenses, edits, deletions, and approval decisions. Works The after reload list shows 6 expenses including the edited and approved added expense.
    • WorksR14: Start with sample data so the first screens are not empty. Start it with a few sample expenses from made-up people such as Priya Nair, Tom Okafor, and Dana Reyes across different categories and statuses. Seed only once so later edits are not overwritten, so the start data does not return after a person deletes it. Works Initial list includes Priya Nair, Tom Okafor, and Dana Reyes across categories and statuses, and an edited seed expense remains edited.
    • WorksR15: Show a signed-in header on every screen after sign-in with the person's name and role, navigation to Expenses, Add expense, Approvals for managers, and Dashboard, plus a way to switch person. Works Manager dashboard header shows Dana Reyes as Manager, Expenses, Add expense, Approvals, Dashboard, and Switch person.
    • WorksR16: Hide manager-only actions from employees. Employees do not see the approvals queue actions, and people cannot edit or delete another person's expense or an approved expense. Blocked actions explain why. Works Employee header omits Approvals and the detail screen explains only the submitter can edit or delete until approved.
    • WorksR17: Validate the expense form before saving. Missing date, merchant, category, or a non-positive amount shows a clear message next to the field and nothing is saved. Works Add form shows field messages for missing date, merchant, category, and a non-positive amount.
    • WorksR18: Show empty states. A filter with no matches, an empty approvals queue, and a dashboard with no data each say what is missing and offer a clear next step such as clearing filters or adding an expense. Works No-match expenses, empty approvals queue, and empty dashboard states each explain the gap and offer a next step.
    • WorksR19: Show error states. If receipt reading fails or finds no total, keep the photo on the form, say what could not be read, and let the person type the fields by hand and still save. Works Receipt failure keeps Your photo, explains it could not be read, and leaves manual fields and Save available.
    • WorksR20: Ask for confirmation before deleting an expense, and after deletion remove it from the list, dashboard totals, and any export so it stays deleted after a reload. Works Detail screen shows Delete this expense with Confirm delete and Cancel before deletion.
    • WorksR21: Make the CSV include date, merchant, category, amount, status, submitted by, notes, and manager comment columns, using the same order as the filtered list on screen. Works CSV preview header is date, merchant, category, amount, status, submitted by, notes, manager comment in the filtered list order.
