Rate Change Tutor

Status: Live.

  1. Your muse

Make an assignment for my math class on rate of change, where a student writes what they're struggling with and you chat with them and make visuals that they have to interact with.

  2. Done. Built Rate Change Tutor and npm run verify exits 0 (5 tests passed).

  3. Failed

    Checks found problems

The final screen still shows a 'Try again' failure message for the practice answer 20, beside the finished summary.

  4. Done. Fixed the judge issues and npm run verify exits 0 (5 tests passed).

  5. Failed

    Checks found problems, try 2

    Smoke test

  6. Done. Fixed the smoke failure and npm run verify exits 0 (6 tests passed).

  7. Failed

    Checks found problems, try 3

The final screen does show the practice feedback and a copyable teacher summary, so the main result is present.

  8. Done

    Checks passed, try 4

    Who it's for

Middle and high school math students doing a class assignment on rate of change, set by their teacher.

    How it works

    1. The student types what they are struggling with about rate of change, and picks their level if asked.
    2. The tutor asks one quick diagnostic question and shows a real world scenario, such as a car trip or a filling tank.
    3. The student interacts with a visual, for example dragging two points to change the slope or moving a time slider, and explains what changed.
    4. The tutor replies to the explanation, gives a hint or a harder step, and adapts the next visual to the sticking point.
    5. The student completes a short practice check in their own words.
    6. The student sees a summary of what they can now do and what to practise next, ready to copy for their teacher.

    Screens

    • Say Your Struggle. The student writes what confuses them about rate of change and starts the assignment. One example prompt is shown so they know how much to write.
    • Chat and Explore. The main assignment screen. A chat panel sits beside an interactive visual, such as a draggable graph or slider scenario. The student must move the visual and explain it before the tutor advances.
    • Practice and Summary. A short practice check, instant feedback, and a copyable summary of strengths, sticking points, and next steps for the teacher.

    What goes in

    • Text: A sentence or short paragraph about what the student is struggling with, typed on the first screen. Plain text, under 1,000 characters.
    • Text: Short chat replies, explanations in the student's own words, and answers to practice questions during the session.
    • Text (optional): Interaction results sent as numbers, such as a dragged point position, a chosen pair of points, or a slider time value. Sent automatically by the interactive visual, not typed by hand.

    What comes out

    • Text: A friendly multi turn tutoring chat with questions, hints, and feedback tied to the stated struggle.
    • Text: Interactive visuals drawn by the app: draggable points on a graph, a secant line slider, a slope triangle, and filling tank or trip scenarios with live rate readouts.
    • Text: A short practice check with instant feedback, plus a copyable end of session summary of what improved and what to practise next.

    Models

    ModelUsed forWhy
Muse WonderRuns the tutoring chat, diagnoses the stated struggle, creates rate of change scenarios and graph data, judges student explanations, and writes feedback and the final summary. Interactive graphs are drawn by the app from the returned numbers so students can drag points and move sliders. It can reason about math pedagogy, follow a multi turn conversation, and return structured JSON for interactive visuals.

    Limits

    • This covers introductory rate of change: average rate, slope, interpreting tables and graphs, units, and steepness on curved graphs. It does not teach a full calculus course or derivatives beyond a simple tangent idea.
    • Feedback is tutoring help, not an official grade. The teacher should review the final summary before using it for marks.
    • Worked answers are generated and checked step by step in the app, but a student should still show their own reasoning in class.
    • There are no student accounts or teacher dashboard. A session stays in the browser and the summary must be copied or downloaded before the tab is closed.
    • The tutor will not just hand over homework answers without the student trying the interactive step first.

    From your inspo

The person gave only a short note with no files. They want a math class assignment on rate of change where a student writes what they are struggling with, chats with a tutor, and works through visuals they must interact with.

    Takes

    • The core assignment job: a student states what they are struggling with about rate of change.
    • A chat based tutoring flow that responds to the stated struggle instead of giving a fixed lesson.
    • Visuals the student must interact with, not just look at, before moving on.
    • A classroom assignment feel, with a clear end product the student can show a teacher.

Cost per run: about $0.09 (est.). One run is about 4 Wonder turns. Input totals about 8,000 tokens at $4 per million, which is $0.032. Output totals about 2,800 tokens at $20 per million, which is $0.056. Total is about $0.09.
